May blossoms Albizzia Lebbeck

On a sunny day in the end of May, I was planning to grasp a few shots of the charming Queen Crape Myrtle purple blossoms when fragrant yellow Albizzia Lebbeck fowers greeted me on the way.

The fluffy puff-like plush flower clusters sways happily in the breeze, with some impatient ones dancing off the tree and making a carpet of filaments, buds and stalks scattered round the tree ground.

Albizzia lebbeck has oval alternate bipinnate leaflets, with tiny oval glands at the base of the leaf petioles. This is a tree with bisexual flowers that clustered in groups of 2-3 capitulum in leaf axils, and a stalk under the flowers.

This tree has a funny English name, called ‘Woman’s tongue tree’, probably because of its long string of tongue-like pods hanging to the tree, and when the “da da” sound resulted from its mature dry seed colliding with each other inside the non-compartmental seed pods as the wind blows.
